This class is for teens and tweens who wish to use journaling to connect with themselves in a thoughtful and artistic way. Journaling is a constructive way to process unique challenges of growing up. By the end of several weeks, you will have pages filled with your own collages and writing, and the skills to continue the practice on your own.
We will look at collages by renowned artists and discuss the historical context, the graphic subject matter, as well as the narrative of the work. Students will be encouraged to write their thoughts while in class and also to bring some of the source materials for their collage.

Session 1: Through writing and art making, we will explore many reasons for keeping a visual journal: to preserve memories, understand our experiences, identify goals, and envision new possibilities. We will learn about the origins of collage in rebellious art movements of the twentieth century, then use cut magazine pages and other teacher-provided materials to fashion covers for our journals.

Session 3: For our third session, we will explore unconventional methods of portraying the human form, with Kenyan American Wangechi Mutu as our primary example. At the same time, we will sample some more advanced sketchbook journal techniques, including pockets, windows, stitches, and pop-ups. Finally, students will make plans for a more

Session 2: In this session, we will use freewriting and collage to remember and recreate important location in our lives. For inspiration, we will turn to the great collage artist Romare Bearden, whose collages radiate a powerful sense of place. Students are encouraged to bring collage-able materials such as magazines, junk mail, and other paper scraps.

Session 4: During our fourth session, we will experiment with abstract and surreal  approaches to expressing thoughts and emotions through collage.

This class offers teens a chance to create a large painting in a studio environment. We will start with sketches and small studies, then proceed to paint on a large canvas. Examples of art, group activities, and writing prompts will support students in arriving at an exciting idea for their painting. Students will apply elements and principles of art to create their work and gain an understanding of the visual language. We will discuss how a work based on abstract concepts can stand on its own and also supports representational painting. Through the process students will develop a compelling piece of enduring value, aesthetically satisfying and personally meaningful.
