Big Painting Project

As students transform their ideas into a painting, they will expand their knowledge of visual elements such as lines and shapes, color, value, texture, form. We will talk about size relationship, color relationship, focal point, edges, and open and closed volume and composition. We will think about scale, balance, visual rhythm, pattern, space and light.  We will discuss how abstraction can stand on its own and also supports representational painting. We start with an imaginary space with the idea of oneself as the subject in this space. The self can be an abstract design, a simplified representation of self, or be symbolically represented by plants, animal or object. There can be multiple figures in this space. What is the nature of this space? Is it abstract or it is an interior or exterior space. Are there other elements important to include? Then think about the colors in this universe that you are creating. Is it light or dark or somewhere in the middle. As you create your composition, consider where is the lightest and darkest part of the painting. Consider the shapes you are creating and how they can interlock to create visually exciting rhythm and pattern.
