Character Design.

This class introduces young artists to the world of character design with the goal of producing a full character model sheet and if time allows, an animation of character turnaround.

We will talk about the concept of character design, and the role it plays across all entertainment, from comics and video games, to folktales and films. We will identify everyone’s interest in their character, do thumbnails and select a thumbnail character to draw and refine through the course. We will have a drawing lesson focusing on the principles of solid drawing and figuring out the size of each character.

Artists will be shown a couple of professional turnarounds, as well as some of my own to give them a grasp of what they'll be working towards. From there, we will create our first key image, the Front View then move on the side view, back view and finally 3/4 view.

For our final week,  we’ll import Artist’s work to the animation software, Toonboom, and show them what their character looks like in a full animated spin.

students.

This course will be an introduction to the art of creating comics. This program is ongoing. Each class we cover a new topic and for those continuing students we take a deeper dive into the topic that the student can apply to their comic. Students are encouraged to bring forward their own characters, voices and stories while we hone our craft. We work traditionally and our goal is to create a finished small comic/zine of their work by the end of the 6 week section. We will also engage in collaborative comic exercises, games to get to know each other, and learning that making comics doesn’t have to be too difficult.
